He's Finally Here!

Of course, I am a few days late BUT come on, 3 boys under 5 - yeah, I get a few day reprieve!!!

So here is the birthstory :)

Colt James

Born: 5/21/08 @ 7:45am

7 lbs. 2 oz. & 18 1/2 inches long

Here goes… So this birth went MUCH better than my other 2 inductions. We were induced at 39 weeks for Hydroneprosis (enlarged kidney) on Colt. I checked into the hospital at 9 pm – I was dialated to 1-2 and 0% effaced. They started Cervidil at 10:30pm. The plan was to do another round of Cervidil at 2:30am and then start the Pitocin at 6am. Well around 12am I started to feel really really crampy – not super painful, but it was every 2-3 minutes, so no rest for me L That continued to 2:50am when they checked me again and I had progressed to a 2-3 cm dialation with 50% effacement. Since I had made so much progress with 1 round of Cervidil; they decided to hold off on another round of that and just start the Pitocin at 6:30am as planned.

Well, about 20 minutes later – 2 nurses and a resident stormed my room saying that Colt’s heartrate had dropped to 60 (it had been 120-160) so they needed to break my water and insert an internal monitor to see what was going on. That was painful! BUT before she broke my water, I was already dialated to 4cm (only 20 min later!) When they got the monitor on his head, his heart rate was registering at 140 instantly and in retrospect I think the heart rate monitor picked up my heart rate at 60 instead of his and they probably over-reacted.

So, after they broke my water the contractions became incredibly painful. I instantly requested my epidural BUT since they hadn’t expected me to progress as fast as I did – I hadn’t had enough saline pushed thru, so they had to get another bag and ½ of saline into me BEFORE they could order the epi (I could have shot someone – seriously) I offered to drink the saline but they declined that offer.

So now it is around 3:45am or so, contractions are kicking my ass and all I can think about is how I am going to miss the epidural and have a freakin’ natural childbirth that I did NOT want! After they order the epidural they now have to wait for the lady to come down b/c now she is an emergency L I was really scared to progress to fast to get the epi and was 6cm and 80% effaced before she showed up.

It was about 1 hour and 25 minutes from the time my water broke until I got the epidural. I labored for another hour and ½ and was feeling really good (actually slipped in and out of sleep) when they said I was complete but the baby was really high still (-2) At this point I still was feeling no pain – I could tell when I was contracting, but not painful really. I started to push and it took about 5 sets of pushes for Colt James to enter the world at 7:45 am! I never needed the pitocin, which was a new experience for me! I really think that since I couldn’t really feel anything – I pushed a lot harder and was able to bring him down and out so quickly.
Even though that 1 ½ of hard labor was excruciating – it was nice to have a pain-free delivery. Baby and mama are doing great and were home the next day!
